Ban Criminal Action Not Guns
I find the gun control position not only offensive but irresponsible and regressive too. Any true progressive would have to be against gun control as it is very old (at least16th century) and has been used throughout time to repress and dominate people. Kings controlled guns until the Empire days. Then they gave peoples the right or duty to own guns as an army for the King. It was the US Revolution where the individual owned firearm was realized.
We took our guns away from the king and used them for the common good. Like our fathers a couple centuries ago, responsible gun ownership is the badge of a free people. Hitler took guns and held total control of the use of guns as has every dominating regime since their invention. Kings and governments realized, as did the writers of the Constitution, that the ability to defend against animals and criminals extended to the animals and criminals in government as well as in the "wilds." If you want to walk into a world with guns empty handed it is your choice. In my mind such action is neglect of your responsibility to defend the helpless and not least your self and family. Such actions I feel are totally selfish and abandon what it means to be human.
To say that an inanimate object holds responsibility is not only a rationalization but blatently false. Using a gun is not a crime murder is. Using a chain saw is not murder but it will do the job just as well as a gun or a knife. The 2 largest attacks on civilians in the US were done with box cutters, pocket knives, gasoline and fertalizer. Guns had nothing to do with those actions and in fact the perps did not even have firearms with them. I am not a fan of gun laws but lets face it; the way it is done today is really screwed up. No! People should not be prevented from arming themselves. Yes! Some sanity needs to be legislated to prevent such crimes but the gun is the smallest part of such actions.
Change the gun laws to where they make sense and offer more training.
